I know I'm sometimes guilty of this ... I want to make a left turn
and I am waiting for the traffic to clear. As I pull into the
intersection, I'll turn my front wheels like this \\ getting prepared to make that left turn.

Why? If someone hits you from behind, with wheels turned you'll be pushed into the on-coming traffic. Recently, a driver in a nearby town was killed when this exact thing happened ... the driver was waiting for traffic to clear, the driver behind him hit his car and he was pushed in front of an on-coming truck.
